WHY TEAK?

Wood is one of the earth's truly renewable resources. TEAKWOOD ("Tectona Grandis") is superior to all other wood types, with a reputation derived from its matchless combination of these inherent characteristics:

  • resistance to rotting and deterioration
  • impervious to elements and insects
  • lightweight
  • strength
  • attractiveness
  • workability
  • seasoning without splitting, cracking, or warping

When choosing teak furnishings, be sure to select Premium Grade plantation-grown teak, kiln-dried to a moisture content of about 8-10%. Beware of commercially stained wood, which has a reddish color. Teak should be left in its natural color, or dressed with clear genuine teak oil to enhance its amber luster.

Though found in other parts of the world, the teak grown in Java, on the Islands of Indonesia, is recognized as the world's finest. The Indonesian Government's strict reforestation program ensures protection of the environment while allowing fully sustainable teak production.

Jatique's products are all handcrafted from teak timbers commercially grown and harvested on teak plantations in Java. Our furnishings are built with pre-selected quality teak and designed with precise mortise and tenon joints and solid brass fittings for a rich finish.

For centuries, shipbuilders have used solid teak for its unique properties of strength, endurance and elegant beauty. These natural characteristics make teak the perfect choice of modern day craftsmen designing furnishings for both indoor and outdoor lifestyles.

TEAK CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Teak is a beautiful and durable hardwood. Due to its dense grain and high natural oil content, teak requires little to no care and will maintain its strength and attractiveness for decades.

NATURAL WEATHERING

The smooth rich complexion of the wood requires no paints or finishes. When left outside in its natural state, teak weathers to a rich silvery gray patina. This aging process will occur after the furniture has been outside about one year, and does not represent any change in the strength of the wood.

OILED FINISH AND SEALER

Some people prefer to dress their teak furniture with teak oil giving it a golden amber glow. (Be sure to purchase oil that does not contain any pigmentation or stains). This can be done whether it is left outdoors or kept inside. Teak oils penetrate into the wood and replenish the oil supply, sealing the wood's cells and minimizing the effect of accidental spills. Periodic re-oiling will be necessary to maintain the color and sealing effect of oils.

Sealers coat the wood and provide a barrier to the outside environment and usually add a glossy finish. The main drawback with sealers (such as varnish) is that they can develop cracks, which allow moisture to get under the surface. This causes the sealer layer to flake off, requiring maintenance.

Please note that finishes and oils only act to maintain the aesthetic effect of new teak; they are not required to maintain the strength and durability of the furniture.

CLEANING

For periodic cleaning, use a mild detergent and a soft bristle brush or a specially designed teak cleaner. . To restore the original blonde color, use a solution of four parts detergent and one part bleach. Rinse the entire piece and allow about 48 hours to dry, then oil the teak to re-establish the golden amber color.

Teak furnishings are investments that improve with age and last for decades, which is why Architects, Designers, and Builders choose teak for their discerning clients.
